Her Cold Fingers – Я Себя Сам… EP review

“Я себя сам” is the debut EP of the Russian post-punk band “Her Cold Fingers’. Or it’s better to say, the EP of a band which is called a post-punk one since there’re plenty of other influences, like the 90’s alternative rock tendencies, a bit of grunge itself and a touch of Russian garage rock. Well, if the latter aspect shall be rejected unless the band wants to drown in hundreds of bands of this kind, the approach of the 90’s mixed with post-punk seems very nice and perspective idea to be developed. The stuff of this 10 minute long EP is very dynamic and powerful, probably, even a bit more powerful than it’s necessary (as the example, “Измена” sounds as a song which requires much more fragile sound since all the rhythmical changes are very predictable and a bit boring), though this offers a listener quite catchy stuff. According to the minuses, of course, there’re some. First, the drums are mixed very clumsy, and sometimes it really harms the listening, and second surface minus is the vocal line, which actually has much more space for experiments, which are needed even for this EP (hard to say what will happen if this isn’t improved in the forthcoming longplay). Also the way the lyrics are put on the music usually isn’t much successful since it’s the foremost reason of my associations with this “native” clichéd rock approach, though sometimes it’s done more than just good. So, we have an EP which promises us… something. And having a look at it is much recommended, at least to take a note, because the band exactly has potential and the headline song “Я Себя Сам” (which is 100% hit without any indulgences to the first release) promises us much more than what is offered now.
