MFMB – the debut mini-LP 12” review

The debut mini-LP of a Swedish band MFMB is a really strange mixture with no particular style. Foremost a band can be called a pop one though it also has some motives which are what Grave Jibes is dedicated to, as well, as some others, like trip-hop and indie rock backgrounds in a quite coldwaveish “Anthill Man”, some post-industrial-pop stuff a-la late Liv Kristine’s Theatre of Tragedy, combined with post-punk in “Control” and so on. Too many elements can be underlined in this cocktail which, to be honest, sounds quite fresh. But the main problem of this release is that according to its music, MFMB don’t exactly know their musical purposes – to develop independent music itself or to get some money, opening for “famous” bands. This release sounds as if they want everything at once. So, though this band already has its style, it should also find its way to move forward. And currently we have quite interesting release, which will satisfy a listener who’s ok for even not touching but “grabbing” pop.
